(10/14/1999 - 01/14/2024)
Our beloved son, grandson, nephew, friend and colleague, Atahan, died in a hot air balloon crash in Eloy, Arizona on January 14, 2024. His unexpected death left us with his memories and our imagination of how his life would unfold if he lived. This website is built to bring together a community of people who love Atahan to provide them a space to support each other and share their love, grief and memories.

"He connected with people in a way that is hard to describe."

Atahan was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 14th, 1999. His family moved to Silicon Valley in June of 2000. Atahan attended Montclaire Elementary School in Los Altos until fifth grade and when the family moved to Orinda, finished fifth grade at Del Rey Elementary School. He then attended Orinda Intermediate School and Miramonte High School. He completed a double major in Mechanical Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University. Upon graduation, Atahan started the two-year Graduate Program at Orsted. He moved to Chicago in 2022 and lived in Arizona in 2023. At the time of the accident, he had completed his rotation in Arizona and was about to move to Copenhagen, Denmark. Wherever he was, whatever he was doing, he built a close group of friends around him, made time for them, supported them and cared for them deeply.
Atahan was curious, enjoyed reading, fencing, traveling and hanging out with his friends, playing video and board games. He loved the outdoors, especially hiking, watching birds and more recently, bouldering. He read mostly non-fiction, especially history. He also enjoyed science fiction and fantasy such as the Lord of the Ring series. His favorite movie growing up was the Road to Eldorado. Atahan traveled extensively and globally. He loved to learn the history and the local culture of the places he visited. He was incredibly curious and was always ready to try something new. Atahan was an activist at heart and followed his passion. He followed politics avidly and understood the human aspects of policies and their impact. He wrote for Tartan, CMU's newspaper, about politics. Atahan had a crooked smile and kind and loving eyes. He connected with people in a way that is hard to describe. He loved and was loved deeply. He reminded people around him to give themselves grace. In his absence, we’ll have to keep reminding each other. Atahan died on January 14th, 2024 when the hot air balloon he was riding crashed. He died too soon and we miss him a lot.

Fellowship

Atahan was passionate about the environment, loved outdoors and wanted to go to graduate school. He enjoyed learning about and working with technologies and policies to support climate change mitigation. In his honor, his family and friends started an Endowed Fellowship that will support one graduate student studying and working to tackle climate change in Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University.
